Memorial
Day
| There's more to the Memorial Day Ceremony
than one would expect. There are 384 flags, (from families who submitted
their Deceased Veterans' Funeral Flag), to be prepared.
The yearly preparations consist of : check the poles for damage, paint / re-paint,(if necessary); Attach flags to the poles and store them on trailers until Memorial Day morning; just prior to Memorial Day, Legion members and volunteers drill the holes in the Cemetary for the flags to be inserted; Finally, at 6:00 on Memorial Day morning, we all gather to set up the "Avenue of Flags". Also, in the preceeding days, the Legion Auxilliary members and volunteers place Various mementoes at gravesides of those Veterans. This act of reverance and remembrance helps the community spirit to bond a lasting kinship between the families of our fallen military and those of us who respect their contributions to the common freedom of the people of the United States of America. |
